Week 4 of 12
Self-Talk, Beliefs & Thought Reframing
The story I tell myself.
Participants explore how thoughts shape feelings, recognize common thinking traps, and practice balanced, compassionate reframes.
Learning objectives
- Explain the connection between thoughts, emotions and actions.
- Identify at least four common thinking traps.
- Write balanced reframes that are honest, not merely positive.
- Practice self-compassionate inner language.
Teaching notes
- Reframing is not forced positivity. A balanced thought should feel believable.
- Some beliefs formed in hard circumstances; changing them takes time and repetition.
- Self-compassion research suggests kindness toward oneself supports, rather than undermines, motivation.
Examples & scenarios
Missed deadline
'I always mess things up' becomes 'I missed this deadline; I've met most others. I'll ask for help planning the next one.'
Unanswered invitation
'They don't like me' (mind-reading) becomes 'I don't know why they haven't answered yet; I can check in.'
